Psych/Mental Health Record Abbreviations & Terminology Quiz: Answers

The following are abbreviations you could encounter in a medical record. How familiar are you with psych/mental health record terminology?

  1. SSRI =
    Treatment. A type of anti-depressant medication
  2. GAD =
    Diagnosis. Generalized anxiety disorder
  3. EPS =
    Other. Extrapyramidal side effects, a side effect of anti-psychotic medication
  4. EMDR =
    Treatment. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. A treatment similar to hypnosis which may be used for PTSD.
  5. CAGE =
    Diagnostic. A screening tool for alcoholism
  6. MMSE =
    Diagnostic. Mini mental status exam
  7. PD =
    Diagnosis. Panic disorder, PD may also be used for personality disorder
  8. OCD =
    Diagnosis. Obsessive compulsive disorder
  9. TCA =
    Treatment. Tricyclic anti-depressant
  10. CBT =
    Treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy
  11. ECT =
    Treatment. Electroconvulsive therapy (shock treatment)
  12. CNS =
    Other. Central nervous system
  13. SO =
    Other. The significant other.
  14. NOS =
    Diagnosis. Not otherwise specified. When a person’s symptoms do not fit well in one specific diagnosis.
